Abstract

The biblical metaphors of the pilgrim and the sojouner occupy an important place in Christian spirituality, both in Scripture and in the Protestant tradition throughout history. In the context of the New Testament, the text of I Peter 2:11-12 has seminal value for a theology of pilgrimage, as an image of the Christian condition in the world – both for the first readers of this letter in first-century Christianity, and for the contemporary church. The metaphorical use has its roots in the identification of Christians as God's chosen people, since the pilgrim patriarchs. Careful use of the Septuagint text created a line of continuation between ancient Israel and the Church of Christ. From the study of this facet of Christian identity, a biblical theology of pilgrimage naturally emerges, which challenges the Church of today, with implications for Christian spirituality today.
