Abstract

This article focuses on non-institutionalized religion and gender issues in the "Outlander" series. The main objective is to reflect on gender inequality and patriarchy based on the series, investigating the religious aspects present in media and the "Sacred" that people seek in contemporary society, as well as the position of women in this context. The methodology employed is based on the analysis of the "Outlander" television series as a tool to reflect on the proposed questions. The series is approached as a case study within pop culture. The contrast between the worldviews of the characters Claire (a 20th-century woman with a modern scientific mindset) and Jamie (an 18th-century man with a worldview influenced by religious convictions and superstitions) is analyzed. The analysis delves into how religion has historically legitimized female subservience , using examples from the series and theological discussions. Concepts such as romantic love and the manifestation of the sacred in contemporary culture are explored. The article also discusses the role of practical and feminist theology in re-signifying feelings like guilt and promoting gender justice. It is concluded that the analysis of the "Outlander" series demonstrates how pop culture has become a fertile ground for the re-signification of religious experiences. The series reveals that, even in a secularized society, the sacred persists and reinvents itself. The article concludes by stating that "Outlander" serves as an invitation to dialogue between faith and culture, science and spirituality, and tradition and transformation , opening paths for a more inclusive spirituality committed to equity and human dignity.
