The development of the theological idea of free will in Philip Melanchthon
Keywords:
Melanchthon, freedom, willAbstract
The Reformer Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) developed his theological conception of free will during all his life. Departing from a strong deterministic version in 1521, he increasingly noted the significance of human free action. Some key moments in this process are highlighted in this paper, trying to show that Melanchthon was moved by a real concern with this theme at the same time as by the need for a proper rational formulation of it. In this sense, he used elements of philosophical, dialectical and rhetorical tradition in his elaboration of the theological question, offering a way to think about biblical faith in accordance with rationality.Downloads
