Abstract

The Reformer Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) developed his theological conception of free will during all his life. Departing from a strong deterministic version in 1521, he increasingly noted the significance of human free action. Some key moments in this process are highlighted in this paper, trying to show that Melanchthon was moved by a real concern with this theme at the same time as by the need for a proper rational formulation of it. In this sense, he used elements of philosophical, dialectical and rhetorical tradition in his elaboration of the theological question, offering a way to think about biblical faith in accordance with rationality.

http://lattes.cnpq.br/2654429053268264: Possui graduação em Teologia pela Escola Superior de Teologia de São Leopoldo, RS (1989) e doutorado em Teologia também pela Escola Superior de Teologia (1997), tendo realizado parte dos estudos do doutorado na Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (EUA) e pesquisa pós-doutoral na Europäische Melanchthon-Akademie Bretten, em 2019-2020, na Alemanha. Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. Sua tese para promoção a professor titular da UFJF foi: Proposta de Edição Crítica e Tradução dos Loci Theologici (Tópicos Teológicos) de Filipe Melanchthon, de 1521. É professor permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Religião da UFJF desde 1998, tendo sido coordenador do programa entre 2007 e 2010. Desde 2017, é professor permanente também no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia da UFJF. Atua ainda, desde 2014, como professor colaborador no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Religião da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Na graduação, ensina primordialmente no Bacharelado Interdisciplinar em Ciências Humanas e na graduação em Ciência da Religião da UFJF. Tem experiência nas áreas de Teologia, Ciência da Religião e Filosofia, com ênfase em Religião e Hermenêutica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: filosofia da religião, religião e hermenêutica, religião e literatura, religião e cultura.
