Abstract

This article will discuss the socio-diaconal function of evangelical community schools created in Brazil during the Empire period (1822-1889). In this process, we will analyze the difficulties present in an officially Catholic country, the precarious education and context found here, and the social and diaconal impacts of these institutions for life in the villages where they were located. For this purpose we will highlight the importance of community schools for the development of the localities, the social inclusion of children from poor families, and the promotion of female education.
