Este artigo investiga a recepção inicial do Evangelho de João por Paul Tillich à luz da cristologia joanina de Wilhelm Lütgert e da interpretação de Fritz Medicus sobre Fichte. Ele reconstrói a compreensão de Lütgert sobre revelação, fé e Cristo como a unidade da receptividade e da atividade, e compara-a com a leitura de Tillich sobre João como a revelação da vida divina como luz e amor. O estudo mostra que Tillich prepara uma refundação filosófica da cristologia joanina de Lütgert, integrando conceitos idealistas com a teologia bíblica, antecipando assim sua tentativa posterior de mediar entre a filosofia e a fé cristã.
