African Theology from Gabriel Molehe Setiloane's perspective

Abstract

This article deals with the African Theology in the thought of Gabriel M. Setiloane, and it considers that its role is to send the Africans to its roots. In doing so, the African Theology gives back to the Africans the hope to rescue their Africanity, their vision of life, culture, wisdom and piety. It gives back to African People an Africanity that was stolen by Western culture. While rescuing the values of African culture, the African Theology seeks to dialogue with other theologies because it understands that dialogue produces unity, preserving and safeguarding the difference and freedom. The paper also recognizes that a relevant theology for the African context emerges from the own African reality. This implies to do a Theology that considers the social, political and economic context in the development of theological thought, concomitantly, Christian and African ones.
