Abstract

The article addresses the importance of libraries in the democratization of information and highlights the need to comply with the guidelines established by Federal Law number 10.639/03, which deals with the teaching of afro-brazilian and African history and culture. The master's research that gave rise to this text analyzes, among other points, the collection of the library at the Joinville campus of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) in relation to the presence of works that meet this law. The results show that although there are titles related to the ethnic-racial theme, they represent a relatively low percentage of the total collection. It is concluded that it is necessary to expand and enrich the collection with more works related to afro-brazilian and African culture, as well as promote activities that encourage reading and critical understanding of ethnic-racial relations, thus strengthening the role of the library in building a more inclusive and conscious society.
